In the normal game mode, playing with a song, the player is presented with a display that shows a representation of the guitar's fretboard, divided by numbered frets and colored strings. Within the game, the player progresses along a career (separately for guitar and bass) where more songs, game modes, and challenges open up as the player earns Rocksmith points. Though players can provide their own guitar, Rocksmith was also sold as a bundle that includes the game and adapter, an Epiphone Les Paul Junior guitar, strap, and 2 picks. Other guitars, such as acoustic guitars, may require additional hardware, such as a pickup. Rocksmith requires the use of the Real Tone cable, a USB cable that connects to the standard 1⁄4 in (6.35 mm) output jack of most electric guitars.
